The legislation on biotechnology varies markedly from one Nordic country to another. The aim of this report by the Nordic Committee on Bioethics is to give the reader information of the current status in the different countries and at the same time a chance to compare the legal situations. Nine important areas of biotechnology have been chosen for this overview. Facts concerning each of the Nordic countries are represented in a matrix with some key issues from the legislation. Comparative tables on: assisted reproduction preimplantation genetic diagnosis abortion prenatal diagnosis embryo research, stem cell research and cloning clinical research on humans biobanks genetic testing and gene therapy animal experimentation

The aim of this booklet is to provide an overview of the current legislation in the field of biotechnology in different Nordic countries. This is needed not only by law-makers, politicians and researchers in the Nordic countries, but also at the European level and even more widely. For the first edition in 2003, a small number of hard copies of the leaflet were taken. Similar approach has been taken with this second edition. However, as the legal situation in this field is constantly evolving, the most upto- date version of the tables can be found on the Nordic Committee on Bioethics website at www.ncbio.org.
