Domestic material consumption (DMC)

This indicator shows the domestic material consumption (DMC) for the Nordic region excluding Iceland, as well as for the European Union (EU28). The types of materials are biomass, metal ores (gross ores), non-metallic minerals, fossil energy and other products. The DMC is estimated by adding domestic extraction of natural resources and imports of products and subtracting the exports. The DMC can be seen as a rough indicator of the total amount (weight) of materials used in a country. For comparison across countries, the DMC is measured in thousand tonnes and is compared to GDP in million euros (current prices) in order to be expressed in kilos per euro GDP. The indicator is therefore affected by the exchange rate between national currencies and euros. Exports and imports for the European Union (EU28) are total exports and total imports, i.e. including both intra-EU trade and extra-EU trade. For more information on Nordic Statistics:
